Traffic on a fields from regular play to band practice results inreduced pore space, reduced internal air and water movement and gradual thinning of the turf. The center of football fields, goal mouths, baseball infields and side line bench areas are places prone to soil compaction. Clay based and sandy soils are equally subject to compaction.

Aeration should be done at least two times per year, at a minimum. A recent article in USA Today on field conditions in the NFL featured the New England Patriots and their new field. The Groundskeeper attributed a large part of his success to frequent aeration. By focusing on pushing the roots deeper down into the growing medium, the strength of the turf was greatly enhanced. He was more concerned with root depth than turf color and the quality of the field is testament to his program. Aeration is one of the most important, and OVERLOOKED practices.
