Aeration

Compaction of soils, due to extensive use of fields or golf courses, is one of the leading causes of turf failure. Opening the soil by way of aeration will help your soils “breathe” easier and make for healthier turf grass.

Benefits of Aeration
Aeration benefits the soil in many ways, including:
- improve air and gas exchange in the soil
- enhance water uptake
- improve nutrient uptake by the plant
- reduce runoff and puddles
- improve drainage
- improve turf grass rooting
- reduced soil compaction
- enhance heat and drought stress tolerance
- enhance thatch breakdown

Types of Aeration
There are two basic types of aeration – core and solid tine aeration. Core aeration involves the use of hollow-tine aeration – puncture the soil profile and remove the plugs of soil. Controlling the thatch layer and amending the soils are the main reason for core aerification. Solid tine aeration is used, often at greater depths than the core process, to fracture the sub soil. This is recommended for soils that are heavily compacted and can be done when the turfgrass is under stress without adversely affecting the playability of the surface.

When to Aerate
Spring and fall are ideal times for core aeration, both shallow and deep, for cool season grasses. Spring aeration allows oxygen into the soils to “freshen up” the profile after a winter of dormancy. This will help invigorate the turfgrass and give the grass a jump start for the season. Fall aeration enhances root growth and improves spring green up and coincides with fall overseeding Sumertime is the ideal time for aerating warm season grasses such as bermudagrass.
.
With the introduction of “Needle Tines”, (5/16”x 8” solid tines), playing surfaces can be aerated during the season with no disruption to the surface. The opening of the soil when the plant is under stress provides vital air movement in the soil. This has been shown to be a most beneficial process for helping turf survive.
